Goodbye Aurora!

Auroa has been an Erasmus+ student with us from September 2018 to April 2019. Don’t forget all that you learned with us - about electron microscopy and… about bikes. We paste the most important lessons below ;-) Have a good start in Pavia, Aurora, thanks for staying with us and good luck with everything that is to come!

07 July 2019

Goodbye to our 2019 BEP and MEP students

Good luck with the continuation of your studies Floor, Danilo, Lars and Amanda!

05 May 2019

Our Gatan K2 Summit detector arrived.

After waiting for a long time, today our Gatan K2 Summit direct electron detector finally arrived. This new camera will give a huge boost to our JEOL JEM-3200FSC system and should allow us to obtain high-resolution cryo-EM images from both single-particle analysis and tomography. Many thanks to our department for supporting the upgrade.

From the Black Forest to Delft… Stefan joins the group!

Stefan joins us as a PhD student. After spending some relaxing month across Europe, Stefan has decided to swap Spain’s beaches for the splendour of our clean room and joined us in Delft just on time for this year’s King’s Day. Stefan will work on new sample preparation methods for dynamic cellular machines. Welcome Stefan!

06 February 2019

NWO START-UP grant awarded to our lab!

We are excited that NWO has awarded a NWO START-UP GRANT to our lab. This grant will allow us to develop new methods to capture the dynamics of membrane remodelling processes at high spatial and temporal resolution.

15 January 2019

New year, new members! Stef joins the group.

Stef joins us as a KIND postdoctoral fellow. Stef will work in our and Sonia Conesa’s group at QN on the development of diffraction methods for structural imaging of biomolecular machines and nanostructured materials. Welcome Stef!

19 December 2018

CRYO3BEAMS project granted!

Spearheaded by our colleague Jacob Hoogenboom at the Department of Imaging Physics (ImPhys), a research team comprising Jacob’s group and us, together with industry partners Delmic and Demcon-Kryoz will develop a novel cryogenic microscope (CRYO3BEAMS) in which a high-resolution light microscope is integrated with focused electron and ion beam systems to allow targeted extraction of specific proteins for high-resolution structural determination. The project builds on Jacob’s prior development of the SECOM platform now marketed by Delmic. See here for more information.

01 October 2018

Cecilia and Aurora join the group.

Just after finishing her PhD in solid-state NMR, Cecilia joins us from Utrecht as a research technician and lab manager. Cecilia will help us to run our wetlab smoothly and she will do research on structural aspects of intracellular host defense. We share Cecilia with the Chirlmin Joo lab.

Aurora has just finished her education in Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of Pisa and joins for the next 6 month us as an ERASMUS+ visitor to learn about cryo-EM.

Welcome Cecilia and Aurora!

01 May 2018

Amanda joins us for her MEP project in the Nanobiology program.

Amanda will use our cryo-EM tools to study aspects of bacteriophage structure and evolution in collaboration with the lab of Stan Brouns. Welcome Amanda!

01 May 2018

Tanja joins us as our first PhD student.

Tanja will investigate oligomerisation processes in pathogen defense using electron and X-ray imaging, along with other biophysical tools. Welcome Tanja!

NWO grant of €17 million for the development of electron microscopy in the Netherlands.

The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) has awarded a grant of more than 17 million euros for the further development of the Netherlands Electron Microscopy Infrastructure (NEMI)).

This is great news for all electron microscopy researchers in the Netherlands.

Our colleagues at Imaging Physics and Quantum Nanoscience will receive funding for new high-end equipment, and we ourselves will benefit from investments and facilitated access to the Netherlands Center for Electron Nanoscopy (NeCEN), complementing our state-of-the-art equipment at the BN department.

20 February 2018

Cheng joined for his BEP project.

Cheng joined us for his BEP project that he will do under Jochem’s supervision. Welcome Cheng!
